Our Mission and Values at GBT...
Here at GBT we hope to foster an interest in all things birding, and in so doing, also create a deep and abiding respect for our natural environment. We do so without taking ourselves too serioulsy, but we do take the state of our environment very seriously. We share our knowledge and our passion for all things birding willingly and enthusiastically.
Genus: Torgos Family: Accipitridae (the diurnal birds of prey)
The Lappet-faced Vulture is the only bird to fall underneath this genus. It is African Old World vulture which belongs to the same family as eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is not closely related to the superficially similar New World vultures, and does not share the good sense of smell of some members of that group. Like many vultures, it has a bald head (for hygene purposes) and feeds mainly on carcasses. This species is vulnerable.
