Re: Weekend Target Bird (2)

Hi Jay, your weather seems to be a bit iffy down there - summer just doesn't want to come. I'm waiting to hear if DD found the Honey Buzzard and Cuckoo finch that SS and I missed on Thursday.

Re: Weekend Target Bird (2)

Meantime it was damn hot over here again!

Bumped into DD at Roodeplaat earlier this morning. Both him and us dipped on both the Cuckoo Finches as well as the Eurasian Honey-Buzzard.

A Steppe Buzzard had my heart in my mouth for a while though. Probably the same one you girls saw, BK lol

But as usual, birding was excellent! Saw so many Diederick Cuckoos that we eventually stopped counting. Also Red-chested Cuckoo, female Black Cuckooshrike, 3 African Fish-Eagles, Malachite Kingfisher, Squacco Heron, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Red-throated Wryneck, European Bee-Eater, African Harrier-Hawk and many many more!

It really was a lovely outing.big_smile

Re: Weekend Target Bird (2)

@BK: was just discussing today how unbelievably late summer is this year!
@WTM: sounds like a lekka day cool

I took a drive past the river today, but the tide was the highest I have seen it in ages, probs something to do with tomorrow's full moon, so no interesting bird sightings...the dove is still sitting on her eggs ...I must actually take a pic, it's such a pretty pic among the flowers wink

Re: Weekend Target Bird (2)

Sorry about dipping on the 2 target birds, WTM. I just completed my card for Roodies, and we ended up with 116 birds in 5 hours, despite the horrible weather! One thing that we did find, was a small group of Grey Penduline Tits, which was awesome - I'm waiting for my ORF roll

Re: Weekend Target Bird (2)

We saw them just down the track from where Mark found the Honey Buzzard, on the way down to the eastern hide. About halfway down the hill.

Our neighbour turned 70 last week and on Sunday we attended his birthday party - his gift from us? Breakfast and birding at Marievale Bird Sanctuary this coming Saturday morning for him and his wife!!! Maybe we will even see something super special - like Slaty Egret or a Baillon's! Can't wait!

Re: Weekend Target Bird (2)

I have a scout down on in Wilderness for us, DD.

He went out to go see if there were any Black-necked Grebes around, but couldn't find any. He is however keep tab on some various other specials. So we will pull him in for a bird outing on Friday next week. wink

In the west I have a lady trying her damndest to tie some Victorin's Warblers down for us. She says that they are super sommon on their farm, about 20mins drive from my dad's house. big_smile

Her neighbours have Narian Trogon. She saw it when she was there over the weekend. big_smile
