Re: What did you see today? (4)Don't anyone, for a minute, credit SR for seeing the Dwarf Bitterns! He forgot to mention that I was there - and that is why they appeared. He even called them "my trash birds" while we were waiting for the illusive Crake to put in an appearance. When we started taking photos of Pied Kingfisher, Green-winged Pytilia, Squacco Heron, Green-backed Heron - you knew we were getting desperate and were most likely not going to see the Crake! So much for a positive attitude - it is not magic! But it was an awesome time out - and I made it to a high school where I had to speak at 11:15 with 30 minutes to spare - so I could have stayed another 30 minutes at the spot and maybe seen the Crake. Next time!!! I'll process my pics and see if there are some sights worth posting! A Lesser Moorhen came right out of the water and grass and stood in clear view just 2 meters from me - I was sitting on the window ledge half out the car and it just stood there - amazing! I think it might be my deodorant. Maybe you boys should go out and buy some BRUT! It seems to work with female birds! Re: What did you see today? (4)Here are my highlight shots from the Striped Crake stakeout (I have four cryptic shots of a bird smaller than the Lesser Moorhen that I was secretly pinning my hopes on to be a Crake - but they are clearly Lesser Moorhen chicks Last edited by marktittley (26-02-2011 16:38:51) Mark Tittley (a bird-a-holic) Johannesburg, South Africa Bird Photos: http://bitly.com/MarksBirds Trip Reports: http://bitly.com/BirdingSA #40 24-02-2011 20:04:01

Re: What did you see today? (4)
I drink so much coffee when I am out on a birding outing that I am so wired and jittery that my finger uncontrollably and continuously hits the shutter release button - and if you do shoot on average 800 pics per outing - you are bound to get shots of just about everything. But, I still miss shots - so I think I will invest in a second flask to take even more coffee out with me. Seriously, I use my camera as my binocs most of the time - which means that recording what I see is so much easier than if I was looking through my binocs. I am working on using binocs more to enjoy the sighting more, but have found that is limiting my ability to record every sighting. This is probably a tension to manage and not a problem to solve! Re: What did you see today? (4)Well, a colleague of mine told me yesterday that he walked past this cemetery with his dogs the other day and saw these odd looking birds. He told me that he stopped counting at 30 of them. His description was quite good and it took me little time to figure out what species he was talking about. But what threw me was the number of birds together! I've never heard of that before. I showed him the photo on Roberts and he concurred to the id and then I went further and read about the beahviour and came across the above mentioned quote. I just had to go and see it for myself this morning and was I taken back by what I saw! Laine and Dirk's Bird Photos - created with Bird Photo Organizer - v3.0!
