Re: Magical Malawi: Birding, Cultural and Wildlife Tour not to be missed!Back from this Malawi trip on the 16th of December. It was amazing and we notched up 359 bird species in the end – not bad for just shy of two weeks. What was amazing was to enjoy species that are typically much harder to find in southern Africa such as Whinchat, Isabelline Shrike and Gull-billed Tern together with some incredible birding in forest, montane grassland and miombo! Definitely a country to go birding to! Birding is a state of being... #5 28-12-2011 15:08:06

Re: Magical Malawi: Birding, Cultural and Wildlife Tour not to be missed!Liwonde National Park has to be one of Malawi's top birding spots and in the three nights that we stayed there we took our bird list from around 240 species to the final tally of 359!! This was power birding of note. Memorable sightings included Collared Palm-Thrush, Grey-headed Parrot, Livingstone's Flycatcher, Magpie Mannikin, Pel's Fishing-Owl, Speckle-throated Woodpecker, Racket-tailed Roller, Dickinson's Kestrel, Red-necked Falcon, White-backed Night-Heron, Green Sandpiper, Spur-winged Lapwing, Long-toed Lapwing, Winding Cisticola and many more!! Re: Magical Malawi: Birding, Cultural and Wildlife Tour not to be missed! Thanks for comments guys; glad to see some of you find this interesting! Thought I would share a few shots of species from the Zomba Plateau next. In the little forest that remains here the birding was surprisingly good. Notable sightings included Little Greenbul, Livingstone’s Turaco, Garden Warbler, Grey Wagtail (two separate sightings!), Mountain Wagtail, Olive-headed Greenbul (This is a full species according to Birds of Africa South of the Sahara but probably just a race of Stripe-cheeked though), Malawi Batis, White-starred Robin, brief views of Tcholo Alethe, White-eared Barbet, Red-rumped Swallow, Eastern Sawwing, Placid Greenbul (think Terrestrial Brownbul with different eye colour and call), Singing Cisticola, Evergreen Forest Warbler, Sedge Warbler (really weird to see them in gardens on passage!), Variable Sunbird and Forest Double-collard Sunbird. Yellow-bellied waxbill and Southern Citril were all over the place too. Last edited by Vanga (29-12-2011 08:46:17) Birding is a state of being...
