Snake Encounters whilst out Birding

Just as a matter of interest, what snakes have you all had the privilege of seeing whilst out looking for our feathered friends? smile

I have been spat at twice on two separate occasions by a Mozambique Spitting Cobra as well as nearly stepping on a Rhombic Night Adder whilst leading a morning walk in the waterberg. I have also had sighting of an Snouted Cobra whilst looking for bats in a hollowed out log in the Pafuri region. Needless to say the cobra was not impressed with the torchlight he was greeted with. Then there was also the time in Augrabies Falls when we were walking on moon rock and we nearly stepped on a Kalahari Sand Snake, which made off quickly into the bushes. We chased after him to get a better look but he managed to get away into a clump of thick grass, trying to get him out of here would definatley have resulted in an unnecessary bite.

Besides these on foot encounters i have had encounters with snakes whilst driving and these include the likes of Puff Adder, Black Mamba and Olive Whip Snake.

Boomslang and Cape Cobra, both in a big hurry to get away as snakes most often do wink and ja while driving, puffies.

Re: Snake Encounters whilst out Birding

Stunning photos you have their Imax! big_smile

Has anybody here been bitten before? As mentioned i have just been spat at, same goes for my sister, but never actually bitten (i am incredibly thankful for this). One of my friends who manages a farm in the North Eest had no training with regards to handling snakes and was thrown into the deep end with a famr which had a high density of snakes. In the process of learning how to handle snakes he was spat at, tagged by Herald Snakes, Rock Python and a Rhinkals. He now knows how to handle them and in his own words "Learnt the hard way". Today he gets bitten as often as the Lions Rugby Team wins a Super 15 game...

Re: Snake Encounters whilst out Birding

Black Mamba down on the KZN Coast two Decembers ago.  Whilst walking with WTM and my daughter!!!  i was last in the line through the forest area and it was as if it was waiting for us to pass before it slipped down the branch it was on.  I happened to see it just out the corner of my eye and i stopped dead in my tracks.  We both stopped for a moment, sussed each other out and then he moved on.  Holy moly I nearly wet my pant!

Thankfully i am used to snakes having lived on the coast most my life and having green mambas in the garden daily...So my instinct of freezing and waiting and not making him feel threatened must have helped..

Re: Snake Encounters whilst out Birding

Oooh Laine, I can imagine how you felt. When we were at Kalahari Tented Camp, I heard some Forktailed Drongo's making a racket in the bush behind our tent, and immediately the slender mongooses that were foraging in the shrubbery  charged towards the noise.  Out came a Cape Cobra, not very long, with its hood raised, and charged at one of the mongooses. It lunged, the mongoose jumped out of the way, and like lightning, bit the snake on the back. By the time the snake struck again, the mongoose was well out of reach. The snake then disappeared back under the bush. Ramkat saw it for a short while, but it disappeared. Needless to say this all happened within seconds, no chance for any pics.
