UK Birding

OK - so I am off on a 3 week holiday to the UK in mid August - hope the bloody rain has stopped by then big_smile

I have never actually been on holiday or done any real birding in England - my current UK list of birds I could ID stands at a whopping 10 species - picked up during business trips over the last 2 years sadsad  And 2 of these are House Sparrow and European Starling neutral

I will spend most of my time in a small village about an hour NW of London (Woburn area) and one week on the coast in Cornwall. If any of you well travelled Trekkies have any good tips on some good sites in these areas (and nice birds to target) please let me know. Hopefully I can add a good few new species to my list big_smilebig_smile

Re: UK Birding

Thanks Jay - will give them a try big_smilebig_smile

Did a bit of reading this weekend and I see that the area we are staying at is one of only 2 localised regions in the UK where you can pick up Red Kite, so that will be top of my list smile
Other than that I hope I can add a few Buntings, Finches and Tits and maybe a few different Warblers before they start moving south. At the coast my main target is a Puffin - would love to see one of those big_smile

Re: UK Birding

So I am off on my UK trip this Thursday and hope to add a good few world lifers to my list. I really wish it was an exotic destination like Sweet Sue and Big O’s trip but this will have to do for now big_smile

Being a family holiday (and a non-birding family at that sad) I am not sure exactly how much birding will get done, but these are some of my target species that I hope to find.
From my reading most of these are fairly common species so let’s see how it goes – how many can I add to my current UK list of 10 lollol

European Robin
Great Tit
Long-tailed Tit
Yellowhammer
Great Spotted Woodpecker
Eurasian Turtle Dove
Eurasian Collared Dove
Common Kingfisher
Red Kite (rare but occurs in the area we are visiting)
Eurasian Sparrowhawk
Common Kestrel
Northern Lapwing
Eurasian Jay
Rook
Mistle Thrush
Chiffchaff
Common Chaffinch
Eurasian Blackcap
Eurasian Wren
European Goldcrest
Great Cormorant
European Shag
Puffin (my main target but probably wishfull thinking)
Eurasian Oystercatcher

If I get any half decent pics I will post these when I return big_smile

Re: UK Birding

Trevor, Sweet Sue's brother is also going to the UK this Thursday, so you'll probably meet him on the plane lol Just go to all the seats and ask: are you Sweet Sue's brother?
Good luck, pack your winter clothes,ok? Apparently summer was last Tuesday. I hope you have a great trip.
