Turn your cannon mik-en-druk into a super camera

Some clever okes realised that they could produce a firmware add on for Canon mik-en-druk cameras that unleashes some amazing features.

This is called CHDK (Cannon Hackers Development Kit)

CHDK is a firmware enhancement that operates on a number of Canon Cameras. CHDK gets loaded into your camera's memory upon bootup (either manually or automatically). It provides additional functionality beyond that currently provided by the native camera firmware.

CHDK is not a permanent firmware upgrade: you decide how it is loaded (manually or automatically) and you can always easily remove it.

Using scripts that are added onto the SD card there are some fantiastic features that are unleashed:

- Ability to shoot in RAW
- advanced bracketing options.
- Ultra high shutter speeds - some up to 1/60000
- Histograms and Zebra parameters (live indicators for over and under exposure on screen)
- Advanced grids
- advanced battery monitors (voltage, % battery left.)
- USB remote controls

And my favourite that i played with last night - motion sensor photos. This uses pixel changes on the sensor to pick up motion and then takes pictures - but you can even set it to focus automatically first and then take the photo.

Check out CHDK

Re: Turn your cannon mik-en-druk into a super camera

Tested it in the passage tonight and so far it has been running about 2 and a half hours on batteries that were half charged.

Low light is a challenge, and flash slows it down, but it is working pretty cool. This weekend I'll set it up at the feeding tray and post some results.

Re: Turn your cannon mik-en-druk into a super camera

Yup!

The great news is that with it pointed at the feeding tray almost the whole of sunday - not one visit from a mynah!!

The other interesting observastion was how the other birds intitially mobbed the Grey Hornbill, Especially when it called. I think none of them had ever seen one and did not know what to make of it. Later on they relaxed and accpeted it as one of thier own and it could go around unmolested.
