Eastern Free-state Birding

After another weekend of good birding the the eastern Freestate I sent this email to BirdlifeSA.

I really think this is a very under rated birding area:

Hello Martin.

I frequently visit the eastern Freestate and specifically the Clocolan Ladybrand area. I never return home without a few additional species added to the pentads in the area.

To me and the fellow birders that I have taken there, it is a very exiting birding area, although somewhat difficult to bird.

What makes this area so special to me is that being in the foothills of the Malutis and in close proximity to the Lesotho highlands the diversity in habitat greatly contributes to its appeal. During this weekend we were able to bird a number of dams, typical free state grassland, higher altitude grassland, rocky slopes, short grasslands and fallow lands, all adding different species. In addition there is a section along the Vet River close to Excelsior where the farm roads could possibly give good access to some river edge birding and the Caledon River along the Lesotho birding.

Now in many of our other provinces there are quite well established birding routes and spots. This part of the country might not qualify as a bird route, but may well be better promoted as a destination for fellow birders.

Some of the specials I have seen there is:
Ground Woodpecker
Secretary Bird
Black Harrier
Grey-wing and Red-wing Francolin
Southern Bald Ibis
African Harrier Hawk
Eurasian Swift
Goliath Heron
White Stork
Alpine Swift

During my stay over December we tallied 13 species of Swift, Swallow and Martins, the highest count I have ever had on a birding trip.
From the current SABAP2 and Roberts Multimedia there is a potential of about 300 species in the area with some hard to find specials like Pink-billed Lark, Eastern Long-billed Lark, Mountain Pipit, Ludwigs Bustard, Blue Korhaan and three Courser species.

My question is how does one establish a birding route / birding hot spot in an area which is currently pretty much unknown in the birding community?

Looking forward to your reply.

Very interesting, Imax!

Maybe you should drop your current job and start your own birding business!

Keep us posted.

Re: Eastern Free-state Birding

well lets see if BLSA comes back to me and take it from there. If they dont we see if we can do it ourselves. Of course we will all have to go do some birding there

Re: Eastern Free-state Birding

now we are talking!

and that is exactly how a birding area starts. a few years ago Zaagkuil was just another farm road that no-one knew about. today it is Gautengs birding highway.

hmm....now that i come to think about it, do i really want make my favourite farm road a highway?

Re: Eastern Free-state Birding

you are right, and i already take great pleasure in showing it to people.

added to this, more birders in the area will do the area and people good as more money will flow in, but usage remains non-intrusive.

this spot is alos one of the best star gazing spots as the ridges surrounds you 360 degrees and no light from towns intefere.

Re: Eastern Free-state Birding

I haven't been to Ladybrand since I was a child; my grandfather was the manager of the municipal caravan park for a while (one of his retirement jobs); I remember a beautiful tiny, derelict graveyard there with graves of English soldiers who died during the Boer War, kinda sad, and these huge boulders with passages between them where the Boer soldiers hid their horses; and the rocks were engraved with soldiers names from back then. And it is where I learnt to ride a horse...well a Basotho pony actually LOL!

so, when do we make this birding long weekend? any ideas everyone?

Re: Eastern Free-state Birding

Its about 4-4.5 hours, depending on the lenght of the critical wimpy stop, and the number of greater flamingos on one of the pans next to the road.

Jay - the place is called Lelie Hoek and is pretty much still as you remember it.

the house on the farm was built in the late 1800s and was a headquater for the british in the boer war and a hospital during the 1918 great flu. My brother in law is convinced that there is a lady ghost in the house.
