Nice chance of thundershowers later this week in this area. That will be great for termite eruption and subsequent Lesser Spotted Eagle and Steppe Eagle invasions. big_smilebig_smile

Passop WTM! lol

Definately a hot debate with lots to consider....I know...but I can't say I blame the rangers. Rangers are paid meagre salaries and top management are paid a fortune.

Re: BBW Shimuwini 2012

oooh yay, someone raised the topic of ranger salaries big_smile...lemme quickly drag out my soapbox...there we go...now...where KNP is concerned, and this goes for ANY other park in the country too, including nature reserves...you have 2 NB groups of people in our parks: those whom protect and conserve it and those who interact with the general public, educating them and entertaining them with information about the parks so as to foster appreciation of nature....well guess which 2 groups are paid the least?

If we don't look after the people who look after our parks (the hands-on people) then why should we expect the to do their jobs properly? Would any of you do their work for those salaries? Of course the same could be said for any civil servant in a so-called democratic country rollrollroll

Ja, we spoke to a few people in the Park and there are quite a number of unhappy chappies around. Fortunately the strike did not affect us one bit. But it would seem that a few birds and the likes of leopard were on strike though. lollol

I agree with you Jay, it is a pity that people first have to go on strike before anything gets done, while the "big guys" that sit in their ivory towers and talk rubbish rake in the money. My nephew has a BTechDegree in Nature conservation, and he had to leave the industry, he couldn't support himself, let alone a wife and baby sad

Re: BBW Shimuwini 2012

Ok, so we had a highly successful long weekend!

We recorded around a 175 species.

Some of the specials included:

Collared Pranticole at Shimuwini camp. At one stage I counted 7.
Dusky Lark, we saw around 20 birds.
Two dozen Bronze-winged Coursers.
A magnitude of birds of prey.
Kori Bustard.
Monotonous Lark.
White-backed Night-Heron at Shimuwini bird hide which some beginner birders photographed and only showed me the photos 2 hours later by which time the bird was long gone! madmad lollol
Verreaux's Eagle-Owl
And lots and lots more. I will publish a full list later on.

On the animal front the highlight for me were "fishing" Hyenas and 4 lions on a buffalo they killed about 30 minutes before arrived at the scene. big_smilebig_smile

Re: BBW Shimuwini 2012

We did BBW in Skukuza the past weekend. The overall count for 2 vehicles was 247! which betters our total at Punda last year by about 14.
I managed 7 lifers:
Grey Tit-Flycatcher
Pale Flycatcher
Southern White-Crowned Shrike
Mosque Swallow
Eurasian Golden Oriole
Olive Tree-Warbler
Senegal Lapwing

Our guide was Adrian Haagner and we had a super time. Managed to boost my Kruger list to 267.
The destruction along the Sabie river is quite extensive with many shy birds perching out in the open because of lack of habitat. Many other highlights but the amount of vehicles just made me realize why I prefer areas from Satara and further North.

Well done indeed Vocifer, great sightings!

When you say better our Punda total, what does that mean? We got that type of total from ONE vehicle.

Re: BBW Shimuwini 2012

Yes I remember. I am not sure what the combined total was. Still, it is often perceived that Punda has the best birding when in fact the South also has brilliant birding

Yes I will agree with that, Skukuza, despite being so freaking busy is a real gem!

One of my best sightings this past weekend was that of all 5 of Kruger's vultures around the Buffalo kill. White-backed, Cape, Lappet-faced, Hooded and White-headed. A real special sighting. big_smilebig_smile
