Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

Just some photos....
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n380/batmad_08/Cloeotis.jpg

This guy is a Short Eared Trident Bat, he is listed critically endangered here in SA because when he goes into hibernation, people will often enter caves and their roost sites and wake them up by mistake, causing the bat to fly around and eventually die of hunger and wasted energy

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

He gets his name "Trident Bat" from the 3 forks on his nose. If you look at his nose aswell, it is a typical example of a "Leaf Nose Structure" This makes the bat emit echolocation varying in different frequencies.

All of these photos where taken on our previous trip to pafuri, and this guy is a new record for that area big_smile

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

This is a Bushveld Horseshoe Bat , looks like hes about to kiss someone lol lol

Again you can see the complex leaf nosed structure, Recognizable by his long ears and small size, he uses his nose leaf to echolocate.

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

Back to the Short Eared trident bat..

He has the highest recorded echolocation frequency out of SA's bats, hitting a high 207kHz neutral

A human can hear up to 20kHz with the well trained ear.

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

I must state that the reason we weren't wearing gloves was because the person holding the bats has had a rabies vaccination, just in case, If he got bitten he also sprayed ethanol on the wound imediatly and cleaned the wound.

PLEASE NOTE- All of this was done just as a precaution, there has only ever been one record of Rabies from a bat bite here in SA.

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

Over here we have a Little Free Tailed bat, the white next to his body is a clear give away. The family is called Free tail's because there is a tail that extends from the tail membrane. This bat is one of 2 of krugers most common bat species. Often you will find them in you randawel and of course they are the ones that roost alongside Angolan free tailed bats in the main bridges cool

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

We are also VERY delicate with bats when handling them as they are insanely fragile.

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

Here is a nice one, A fruit bat...I am leaning towards Gambian Eppualated Fruit bat because of the more broader facial structure. But to positively ID him you would need to look at the Palatal ridges inside the mouth.

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

You only get Gambian Eppualated FRuit bats up in the Pafuri Region. Down on the coast etc you will get Walhbergs Eppualted Fruit bat.

Now when this bat is in breeding season, he will raise his Eppualetes (white shoulder patches)and flap his wings while emitting a metal on metal sound, attracting the females.

Re: Batmads Bat information Pages

This is the Schlifflens Bat, as you can see he is opening his mouth and showing off his teeth (which are incredibly small) this is a defence mechanism to make himself look bigger. If he bites you its just like a pin prick smile
