What did you see today? (4)

I had the time of my life today at Borakalalo. The theme of the day was CLOSE UPs. I had some amazing closer encounters with birds (The Dwarf Bittern was 2 meters from me - surreal!!!). Here are a few pics that I took (the Rattling Cisticola sounded like a Levaillant's - I suspect it may be a juvenile):

Re: What did you see today? (4)

Wow, I just saw 2 budgies - a green/yellow one and a blue/white one.

Where you ask? At Amamus Mediterranean Cafe in Parktown North where I am having lunch right now (in a cage so really not-tickable even if they were on the list).

And tomorrow morning I am going to see and photograph the Striped Crake with SafariRanger at the little stream below the village of Kgomo at the start of the road to Zaagkuildrift. I'll be there around 5:30ish, see the Crake around 6:30ish and make it back to speak at Parktown Boys High School by 11am sharp! Craziness! But fun!

Re: What did you see today? (4)

Hi there GBT's big_smile
Boskat & I have just returned from some birding and atlasing in the Vlaklaagte & Ezemvelo areas. smile
We left Fourways at 05H30 yesterday, dodging the Tsotsies, with Pepper spray at the ready.yikes

Arriving in pentad 2535_2845 (off the R25 , east of Bronkhorstpruit) at 07H00 we completed a 2 hour count & saw ,amongst others, Black Crow, African Snipe, SA Cliff Swallow, Pied Starling & Melodious Lark. smile
We heard African Rail calling from a marshy area & shared coffee with Yellow-crowned Bishop, Brown-throated Martin, many Amur's and Ant-eating Chats to complete a bird list of 61 species. big_smile

We arrived at Ezemvelo at 13H00 and started another list for the reserve as were staying overnight in the Chalets there.smile
Our list over that day & the following morning, totaled 86 birds, seen & heard.
Highlights included calling Shelley's Francolin in the grassland near the Sterkfontein stream ( Pt.19 "Birding Gauteng" Pg 162).
Red-winged Francolin called from the koppies in the same area & a displaying Eastern Clapper Lark was picked up against the skyline.big_smile
Unfortunately none of the Francolins could be seen because of the long grass. sad
Little Bee-eater & Lesser Kestrel were added to the list in the same area & Boskat heard Fiery-necked Nightjar, Rufous-cheeked Nightjar & Barn Owl calling early this morning.
The Atlasing Aunties then dodged the traffic & had a quick stop at Smuts House for the resident Rose-ringed Parakeets there.
Back home at 13H00 with Ramkat's car covered inside & out with red dust & full of mozzie bites from the Nightjar "Stakeout". big_smile
