Re: 800 birds in a year. 2011 is the year

Richardsbay I think should be done soon. neutral

2 lifers in your list there for me, plus I dipped on Woodwards' Batis, Southern Double-banded Snake-Eagle, Pink-throated Longclaw, Grey Sunbird, Grey Waxbill and Green Barbet last year September. Furthermore I see that the Sooty Tern is still around and a Rufous-bellied Heron was found in Empangeni.

Creighton is just down the road from my cousin's place and there are 4 more lifers there!

Fook man!!!! Why was I not invited on this mission?!!?! madmad

Several people wanted to be "invited" on this mission!

One of the birds you mention, the Snake Eagle, is sadly very low in numbers and will see it's red data status become more critical. There are estimated less than 50 birds in the country now.

I think we need to buy a Trekkie Xpress bus, and when Niall goes off on his bird hunting expedition, we kwêla the bus and follow him! I would have now had a lifelist of 807, instead of 591!
You inspire people Niall, thanks a lot!

Re: 800 birds in a year. 2011 is the year

Phew. Which rarity will crop up next (and be reasonably twitchable... Whinchat at Aberfoyle is tempting but bloody far!). A little bit of Mileage done for the last 4 birds...

810 - Punda Mania produced excellent sightings of no fewer than 8 male Pennant-winged Nightjars
811 - Driving home from Pafuri, as far as Babalala before Trevor's message made me turn around and head to Den Staat near Mapungubwe - Pacific Golden Plover ticked in the dieing rays of light
812 - Black-tailed Godwit, my nemesis - been seen twice at Spitskop Dam near Kimberley - a merry crew got together and drove 460km there, saw the bird, it flew away not to be seen again drove up and down for a few hours, then 460km back. LIFER!
813 - I am very grateful to SR - Pectoral Sandpipers, a pair again, revisited Mkhombo Dam as they found it a pleasant change from their South American Summer holiday last year, they just get quite irritated with the Russian speaking Stints and Ruffs who don't understand their Spanish!

So-we-to next!?

Cheers

Niall.

Re: 800 birds in a year. 2011 is the year

So Mozambique was friendly. The lack of rain wasn't friendly, so Rio Savane could have given a few more. Additions in Moz, in order of appearance:

Pallid Harrier
White-chested Alethe
Black-headed Apalis
African Pitta

I returned from Moz/Zim on the 15th December, only to head down to Howick the next day via Sani Pass, stopping there overnight. This gave me another 4:

Drakensberg Rockjumper
Drakensberg Siskin (almost bumping into each other they followed on so quickly!)
Sentinel Rock-Thrush (never any doubt!)
Mountain Pipit

I'm thinking about what and where I could find anything before the end of the year. You never can tell! Namibia is a little pricey for a possible dip on a Wilson's Phalarope, even though it would be a lifer...

Total for 2011 is 823.... tick tick tick....

Cheers

Niall.

An interesting read - for some reason I found it interesting, anyway!

quite interesting.

No go out to Namibia...what better way to end this yuor for you with 824 and a lifer for the last one.

And well done!
