Re: Returning Migrants

A large area has burnt down very recently - some parts were still smouldering when we were there on Wednesday. We missed some obvious birds like Wattled Starlings, Arrowmarked Babblers and Green Woodhoopoe, they probably fled before the fire. Got nice sighting of Coqui, near the entrance gate.

Re: Returning Migrants

"Our" Greater Striped Swallows have returned from far-away places, and came to say hello this morning. Did a brief inspection of the nest on our patio, before departing for breakfast. Ramkat says he'd like to sit down with them over a plate of flying ants and ask them just where they've been, and how the chicks that they raised last season are. big_smile I suppose we should have them ringed to see which of the family are the ones that return to the nest, but I don't really like to ring birds, so we'll just have to wonder.

Re: Returning Migrants

Yeah I also prefer the conversation to bird ringing idea, RK wink...I always worry the ringing process causes just too much stress, and birds get ill so easily when stressed hmm

Re: Returning Migrants

What put me off about ringing is what we saw at Little Eden - a Mocking Cliff Chat, with a ring on its leg, but the claw was deformed and the whole leg and foot was swollen. The same problem with a  Village Weaver female. She was hopping around on one leg, the ringed one was deformed. I did make enquiries about who had done ringing there, but never got a satisfactory answer.

Re: Returning Migrants

Yes, terrible that birds should suffer unnecessarily like that.
I must admit though that I have always wanted to get into ringing. I think if one goes through the right procedures and properly qualifies then there should be minimal to no discomfort caused.

Keep looking up... you may see a bird or just choose to praise God!
