Re: ID needed

Sorry I missed you there Niall - I was also there on Saturday but only for about 2 hours.
Shoo - now I am not sure!!  It certainly looked like one of the short-tails when it flushed from the grass (was a tiny bird) but looking at the photo the tail does now seem a lot longer neutral  There were quite a few around the area. This was at top of that first path to the left towards the beacon(near some burnt grass)

Re: ID needed

We saw Zitters/Deserts, but couldn't get a good enough view to be sure. Nearer the top we only saw Wailing. Did you see Sentinel Rock-Thrush? Between there and the Chat/Sparrowlark site we got over 70 species. No Chat, but got the Sparrowlark - Dylan thinks he saw the Chat, but some boxes on Motorbikes scared everything off as we tried to relocate it.

Re: ID needed

lollol  I am then probably leaning more towards Desert or Zitting then - it just did not look like a Wailing at the time it flew off. Now that I recall this was not really at the top of the hill - more like 70% of the way up smile

I missed the Sentinel Rock-Thrush unfortunately. I had great views of the Chat at the other site but no Sparrowlark. Wish they would show themselves at the same time smile  Was the Sparrowlark close to the gate off the main road? I searched for a while there but with no luck. I got the Chat at the kraal about 500m off the main road.

Re: ID needed

Sparrowlark was near the gate, just after you come through, the road forks, we kept right, and the Lark was foraging next to the road.

The glimpse of the Chat was also at that first fence if you carry on towards the kraal.

Re: ID needed

I should have paid more attention on that road sad  I got a Red-capped Lark at the fork and the Chat was on that first fence just after that. Will try again sometime soon smile

Re: ID needed

We saw this bird in the Letaba river from camp. It was quite a long way off and I couldn't get a decent photo because of the angle of the light. It was not very popular amongst the Blacksmith Lapwings! They kept chasing it off but ignored all the other birds around.

The closest I can get is Wood Sandpiper, but the way it feeded wasn't very familiar with my experience of Wood Sandpiper.

Any idea?

Re: ID needed

While at Roodekopjes Dam today I spotted this duck that was associating with White-faced Duck. Any ideas? It had an unusual "tuft" on the back of it's neck as you can just see in these pics. It was really skittish and never let me get within range to get decent shots.

Snapped this guy from the Lower Sabie restuarant 2 weeks ago.

What would you say it is?

Re: ID needed

Looks like a Fiery-eyed Nightjar. lollollol

No honestly for the time of year and where you were I would guess Square-tailed Nightjar (female).
There is definitely no white outer tail feathers and all that does show is a little bit of buff outer edges on the tail which would point to Square-tailed.
I am however no nightjar expert so others may want to differ with my choice.

Re: ID needed

All the nightjars we saw at Lower Sabie in Feb was ID'd as Square Tailed lol

Even though I also reckon it looks like a Fiery Necked Nightjar, I cannot say it is as I have never seen one in the flesh lol

I can levitate birds, but no one seems to care.

Re: ID needed

I would say the lack of prominent white or buff outer tail feather rules out Square tailed Nightjar. The Fiery neck band/nape make it a better candidate for Fiery-necked - they also like to hawk from perches rather than settling on the road, giving many false sightings of European Nightjars in summer! If you look at the feather patterns on the wings, it also looks more like FNN.

Look at: http://www.niall.co.za/Species/bird-pages/409.htm and http://www.niall.co.za/Species/bird-pages/405.htm for comparison.

Cheers

Niall.
