Re: ID neededWe saw Zitters/Deserts, but couldn't get a good enough view to be sure. Nearer the top we only saw Wailing. Did you see Sentinel Rock-Thrush? Between there and the Chat/Sparrowlark site we got over 70 species. No Chat, but got the Sparrowlark - Dylan thinks he saw the Chat, but some boxes on Motorbikes scared everything off as we tried to relocate it. #3768 18-06-2012 10:45:33

Re: ID neededSparrowlark was near the gate, just after you come through, the road forks, we kept right, and the Lark was foraging next to the road. #3770 18-06-2012 11:44:39

Re: ID neededWe saw this bird in the Letaba river from camp. It was quite a long way off and I couldn't get a decent photo because of the angle of the light. It was not very popular amongst the Blacksmith Lapwings! They kept chasing it off but ignored all the other birds around. Laine and Dirk's Bird Photos - created with Bird Photo Organizer - v3.0! Re: ID neededWhile at Roodekopjes Dam today I spotted this duck that was associating with White-faced Duck. Any ideas? It had an unusual "tuft" on the back of it's neck as you can just see in these pics. It was really skittish and never let me get within range to get decent shots. Re: ID neededI would say the lack of prominent white or buff outer tail feather rules out Square tailed Nightjar. The Fiery neck band/nape make it a better candidate for Fiery-necked - they also like to hawk from perches rather than settling on the road, giving many false sightings of European Nightjars in summer! If you look at the feather patterns on the wings, it also looks more like FNN. Most Active UsersBoard information |
