In our area? Around October/November. But start keeping a look out in September. I saw one at Nwenetsi lookout in Kruger in September last year on my birthday. big_smile

Re: First Yellow-billed Kite of the season

big_smile Ok, some record shots from earlier this year. Our resident species, although known as Black Kite can be dealt with as 2 species i.e. Black Kite, the migrant (Sept - Apr) Milvus migrans migrans and then Yellow-billed Kite has 2 races with Milvus migrans parasiticus being resident in the region and Milvus migrans aegyptius visiting July - March. The latter has more distinct barring on the tail than M.m. parasiticus.

First 2 pics are "Yellow-billed Kite" which considering it was April/May most likely was then M.m. parasiticus

The next shot (conveniently) has both Milvus migrans migrans and Milvus migrans parasiticus (the latter a bit blurred though)

Re: First Yellow-billed Kite of the season

According to records, the first Yellow-billed Kites should arrive in the next week. Although we know that some seemed to have overwinter, particularly in the Durban and Pietermaritzburg areas.

I saw one at Nwanetsi picnic spot, from the lookout on September 15th last year, DD. so keep an eye out for them.

Apparently there are reports of a big flock of Lesser Striped Swallows from the Durban area. Faansie Peacock also noticed a lone Lesser Striped Swallow at Vaalkop dam, North West province. So we just might be in for the start of Spring! big_smile
