Re: First Yellow-billed Kite of the season

big_smile So true Laine - just makes birding here even more interesting. One does learn to question things though which we would take for granted elsewhere.

Looking forward to some info WTM - considering we get 3 races up here, 2 of which are the so-called African races.

Re: First Yellow-billed Kite of the season

Hi Marcell, it is recorded that the average arrival for Yellow-billed Kite in Skukuza is the 11th of August. The earliest arrival recorded was August 1, 1986. It then usually leaves again in March. The oldest recorded individual was 23 years old. It is a pick-pocket of note robbing other birds of their food. It is told by africans that the Yellow-billed Kite would steal from a pot carried on the women's heads without them noticing.

Re: First Yellow-billed Kite of the season

I see from SABN posts coming in that there were quite a few YBK sightings in Kwazulu Natal today.

Re: First Yellow-billed Kite of the season

big_smile Thanks for the info WTM. Interesting they arrive before the "official" spring and leave before the "official" autumn. Like they want to get the best 'places' before the rest arrive for the summer where-ever they go.

Thieves they are yes - seem to recall there's a place north of Durban where they're renowned for being a problem when people try and have a picnic. In East Africa it happens all over.

I spotted another one on the way home on sunday.

I also spotted two Klaas's Cuckoos in BnD, I know some overwinter here, so i suppose they were some of the some

Re: First Yellow-billed Kite of the season

Nope, I heard of the report on Friday. They were seen at their normal roosting site on the N4, north of Pretoria on Wednesday. It is about 15km from my house and yet I have had no chance to go out and view them. neutral
