Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

Two trips coming up that may yield something good or not. big_smile

We'll be in the Weerribben National Park this weekend. A lot of water and agricultural land. Nothing special seen there recently but you never know. We'll be in a tiny town called Muggenbeet. Translated = Mosquito Bite. Not joking here. lol I got us some insect repellent yesterday.

Then on 23 October we're leaving for South Africa again. Not a long trip this time but enough to go to Golden Gate Highlands National Park for a short stay in the Mountain Retreat, with my parents. Here's hoping for the Bearded Vultures and better opportunities for photo's! Suikerbosrand is on the list of course and Walter Sisulu or Rietvlei depending on time. I need to have my South African driver's licence renewed, luckily I have a very handy insider, so we'll be in Krugersdorp for at least 2 days.

I'm hoping to bring you some good sightings again. cool

Now look at the mozzies around your home. Are they the same? I don;'t think so?
We did see more though, like another Black Stork, but I'll let Santie post that. wink

Hello Duco! big_smilebig_smile

The male mossie looks very similar to our mossies here at home.

Why do you think they look different? hmm

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

Have a look especially at the male Moszie. wink
There are white patches on their heads, and the black patch on the throat for instance is different to the ones I have seen in SA.

Remember that we have three different species of Sparrow here in South Africa.
Great Sparrow, Cape Sparrow and House Sparrow.

Our Cape Sparrow has the black cheek. The House Sparrow here looks the same as in your photo.

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

Nice pictures Boskat! big_smile
They do look the same when you compare the two species side by side. We don't get the nicer sparrows, just the normal scrungy looking house sparrows. lol
Thanks for the photo's everybody! I love being able to share birds accross the waters and even settling doubts hundreds of kilometers away.  cool

Now for something that's not always good on the blood pressure!! A Hoopoo(Upupa epops)was seen in AMSTERDAM of all places since yesterday! I dearly want to see one here to see if it's the same bird as in SA or not. The Latin name agrees but I think it was WTM who mentioned previously that he's not sure it is. Amsterdam is HUGE, Amsterdam Noord better, but still huge and we don't have contact with birders there who can tell us exactly where it's being seen.
