Re: Returning Migrants

Saw hordes of Black Kite (Yellow-billed Kite) along the east coast. Had a great sighting of one mobbing a troop of crows and trying to steal their food from them!

Furthermore, plenty of waders have returned as well as well as Colloared Pratincole. Looking good. big_smilebig_smile

I hope they brought their wellies along, I believe it's VERY cold at Marievale still big_smile We may have to rename Greenshank to Blueshank.

Re: Returning Migrants

Forgot to mention I saw a Lesser Striped Swallow last weekend at Buffelspoort. Probably overwintering though

Re: Returning Migrants

LOL@Imax lollol
I would agree about the LS Swallow, DD, perhaps it was too young to accompany the parents. Our Greater's bred quite late last season, (their second brood of the season), the young ones were not really (as far as I could judge) ready for a long migration. They still struggled to get back into the nest at sunset, they were just not strong enough to get into the nest the first time, and had to make several attempts. They did leave with the adults though.

You guys may be interested in this page written by Gyorgy Szimuly, a Hungarian birder that's been to South Africa frequently and loves birding at Pafuri. Seems like the Ciconia ciconias have started migrating south. BAD for us, good news for you. lol

Yup, people have reported them here already. But there are also reports of some birds overwintering here as well. Great news for us! big_smilebig_smile
