Help with Gauteng Lifers

Howzit Everyone big_smile

I have recently counted up and had a look at the various species i still need to get in Gauteng and i came up with a list of 31 Possible lifers still left for me in this province. Now i have some idea on where to get some of these species but there are still quite a few that i am fairly clueless about. Now my target is to reduce this list to the 5 hardest species and then i will just wait for recent sightings to come in and i will head out and twitch the respected bird but in the mean time i can still get about 25 easyish lifers.

I really am looking forward to your guys help smile

Thanks!

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Hi Batty

I would consider a possible trip to Ezemvelo game reserve - I picked up the following birds on a weekend there last year this time.

Red Winged Francolin
Orange River Francolin
African Quailfinch (100's)
Melodious Lark (near the park - towards Vlaklaagte)
Dark Capped Yellow Warbler
Barrows Korhaan
Eastern Clapper Lark (lots around)
Striped Pipit (behind the chalets)

We did not see the following but they do also occur in this area

Denhams Bustard (better towards Vlaklaagte)
Sand Martin (apparently are common at the dam but I saw none)

I had a great sighting of Great Reed Warbler at Northern Farm earlier this year which is a bit closer to home.

A lot of these are also on my target list for Gauteng - I am hoping to pick up a few of these on a Warbler/Rallid weekend next year in the Zaagkuildrift - Kgomo-Kgomo area.

Good luck big_smilebig_smile

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Thanks Trevor smile I have personally never headed out towards Ezemvelo/ Vlaklaagte area but now that you mention it i think it sounds like a great idea...

Possible 8 lifers, maybe even 10- that accompanied with my trip down to Wakkerstroom in January and the Zaagkuildrift Warbler/ Rallid Run in march might even take me to 530, leaving me to need only 20 more lifers to reach my year end target for 2012, being 550...

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Sounds great Batty - I have also never even been to Wakkerstroom and there would be quite a few lifers for me there.

I will be lucky if I even get to 500 by the end of 2012 sad
Other than the Warbler weekend I have very few birding trips planned for next year. Maybe a few of us should hook up early next year for a White Backed Night Heron hunt at Bora and will hopefully pick up a few of the other specials.

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Sounds like a plan- Maybe spend the morning hunting down the rallids and Warblers at Zaagkuil and then shoot through to Bora. Im sure we can pick up a lot of lifers for you their and i should also pick up a few smile

Will start having a look at the weekends in march next year and then will let you know...The River Warblers should be most active in the 2nd and 3rd weeks so we can see what we can organize wink

And reaching 500 doesnt take thaaaat long- Took DD a year and me a year and 3 months and i had hectc school commitments, so just as long as you make use of your holidays you should reach it, and when you do, it feels absoloutly great! Congratulations on your 450 by the way wink

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Ja.. and you forget to tell Trevor it takes some moolah to get to 500 lol

Hell, but I travelled like a mad king this last year to get my 500 ..

Punda, Garden Route, Cape Town, Memel, Karoo etc... and the worst part is, I dipped on so many specials at these places, I need to return lol

(not complaining about the last part big_smile )

I can levitate birds, but no one seems to care.

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Bats.. sorry for not replying with better help here.. busy busy..

Just quickly.. Devon should be your best bet to track down Common Quail.. (if you are early and lucky). I flushed them just by driving down the gravel roads not sure on which points in Chamberlain.. will have a look tonight.

Devon once again will be a certainty and best bet to get those ORFrancolin.. they almost seem common there, and you can tick it off so long if you visit this spot.

Dwarf Bittern - Zaagkuil - early to mid January (if the area had good rain)
or just tag along Mark, he seems to keep a spare one in his boot.

Marsh Warbler - Zaagkuil - MPCA dam area between points 2-3 in chamberlains.. they were shouting their butts off there around February this year.

River Warbler, March - Zaagkuil - I am also going to go look for them next year. Heard them this year, but the rain spoilt my chances of getting a view.. so dipped horribly

White Backed Night Heron - Just ask Mark.. he breeds with them in his back yard and makes them pose for photo's then he posts them on here.. lol
Bora.. Bora.. bora..

Dark Capped Yellow Warbler - I have searched for this thing in and around Gauteng without success.. I believe they aren't that common around here, and most people have told me further afield is better such as Drakensberg area etc.

Things like the Pygmy Goose is difficult, it is all luck and rain dependant. If it is going to be dry this year, then your chances will probably be slim.

Ok.. I have gotta go work.. but in all honesty.. Here is how I would do your life list.. Devon, Bora, Mabusa/Old verena Spa road is an absolute must and you will certainly hit a lot of those lifers.. Wait until Jan-Feb and check the forums for updates on Zaagkuil.. if it is dry, you will be wasting your time, but if you time it right, you can hit some of those specials on one day.

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Thanks Batty - I still consider myself an occasional birder so may take me a while longer (that is my excuse and I am sticking to it  big_smilebig_smile)

With a new baby and wife who has no interest at all in birding I dont get out nearly as often as I should - even on holidays. Also still try to make time for a bit of golf now and then which I am also not getting around to. I am in no real rush to push my lists - need to save some for when I am old and grey big_smilebig_smile

Having just met WTM/Laine/DD and many other trekkies recently I am sure I will start getting out a bit more smile

In March I have actually booked for a weekend with Ettiene Marais and we are staying at Wolhuiskraal (I think it is the 3rd weekend) but I am always keen for another trip smile

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Thanks for the help danie! enjoy work and we can chat later wink

For sure Trevor, birding isnt about pushing your list as high as you can, yes some of us love the adrenaline rush but we are a "different breed" if you may. We chase down birds and push our lists but we enjoy and admire these works of art that god has given us while we do so big_smile

looking forward to planning a trip next year with you and everyone else! let me know where your best chances of getting lifers are and we can head out and hunt them down smile

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

Well said Batty - any time out in nature is a blessing whether you get the lifers or not smile

As you said - we are a different breed. I am not even a serious birder and my wife thinks I am totaly nuts with all the research and possible lifer lists I make for each area etc. lol

Look forward to a few good outings with you next year smile

I better also get back to work sad

Re: Help with Gauteng Lifers

lol lol It really sint late for your guys to follow your dreams smile I mean take Jonathan Leeming for example, author of Scorpions of Southern Africa and top Scorpion Expert in SA started his business as a side thing as far as i know, and now its his full time job. Scorpion Adventures has taken off like a rocket and he is literally living his dream smile So one must not always want to live back in the past, you have the time now to make a change and do what you want to do smile Much like Imax and his Konkoit Birding Program smile

All you need is the fire inside for you to drive you towards what you love;)
