I didn't see a lot of pipits, DD, only 1 African, 1 Buffy, and I really looked for them.

Re: What did you see today? (5)

DD - quite a few Fairies at the Klipriviersberg reserve seen last Saturday - just after the entrance gate - At last big_smilebig_smile

Glad you also finally picked it up Vocifer smile Great trip report by the way - I am off to the UK for 2 weeks in August and hope to add a few species to my current UK list (which sits at a whopping 10 yikes)  I will spend a week in a small village just NW of London and then a week on the coast in Cornwall. I better start doing some research on what I could target big_smilebig_smile

Re: What did you see today? (5)

Who says you don't see many birds on an outing in Winter? On Monday I spent the day at Nylsvley and recorded 85 bird species, while on Thursday at Pilanesburg my nephew from New Zealand and I recorded over 95 species with a few that got away from us including a raptor, either Gabar Goshawk or Lizard Buzzard that we left off because we could not be sure.

Re: What did you see today? (5)

Just a quick update on last weekend up in north west Limpopo.

Birding was very slow due to how dry that part of the country is.

One of the more interesting sightings was a PC Goshawk eating a fish. I do suspect that it might have been a fish that died due to drying waterholes.

One of my more rewarding hours spent was putting my camp chair and tripod up around 3m from a water trough close to camp. I had birds like Ashy Tit, Chin-spot Batis and Brubru foraging at arms length from me.

In that hour the birds around me that I can recall were:
Ashy Tit
Chin-spot Batis
Black Chested Prinia
Green Winged Pytilia
Fork Tailed Drongo
Yellow & Red Billed and Grey Hornbill
Pied Babblers
Crimson-breasted Shrike
Red-billed Buffalo-weavers
Long Billed Crombec
Violet-eared Waxbill
Blue Waxbill
Golden-breasted Bunting
Red-eyed Bulbul
Brubru
Cape Penduline-tit

Here are some of the better shots:

Saw a Southern Masked Weaver with Breeding plumage this weekend. They are already calling like crazy around our home.

Re: What did you see today? (5)

Amazing shots Imax big_smilebig_smile

I also have a Weaver that is nearly in breeding plumage in my garden. There is also a half-wit Red Bishop that never completely lost his red coat - looks aweful with his rusty feathers big_smile

Re: What did you see today? (5)

No, Trevor, you can't go around calling a bird a "Half-wit". They have very fragile self-images (there is always someone pecking on them from higher up the feather chain). I think you should apologise or be flogged at the nearest watering hole in full view of the birding community!
