Kibale Forest and Semuliki (Uganda)

Well, things look all positive for the trip (starting Thursday) to Kibale Forest where I hope to do at least a 1 day trip to Semuliki.

Semuliki is bordered by the Ruwenzori Mountains (Mountains of the Moon) and is has the eastern most limit for Ituri forest from the Congo basin. This is also one of the places I'll be looking for the Rufous-sided Broadbill. There are also 53 mammals of which 27 are large land mammals. Here's a snippet off the internet on the birds;

"Birdlife is especially spectacular with 441 recorded species that represent 40% of Uganda's total of 1007. 216 of these are forest species - 66% of the country's forest birdlist - while the list is expanded by the riverine habitat and a fringe of grassland in the east of the park. There are numerous rarities.
46 Guinea-Congo biome species are found nowhere else in East Africa while another 35 can be seen in only 2-3 other places in Uganda. Five species are endemic to the Albertine Rift ecosystem."

Kibale Forest is both renowned for its birdlife and primates with 13 species of primates, including 1,000+ chimps, occurring there. A snippet again on the birds in Kibale (this is of course a fraction of all the specials);

"The park boasts 325 species of birds, including 6 that are endemic to the Albertine Rift region, namely black-capped apalis, blue-headed sunbird, collared apalis, dusky crimsonwing, purple-breasted sunbird and red-faced woodland warbler. Other Kibale specials include the African pitta, green breasted pitta, black bee-eater,... black-eared ground thrush, brown-chested alethe, blue-breasted kingfisher, Abyssinian groundthrush..."

"...including Prigogine’s ground thrush, Nahan’s francolin, Cassin’s spinetail, ..."

This is just a rough idea big_smile of what may be awaiting me in addition to over 200 species of butterflies. If time allows, I might go for a day into the Ruwenzoris NP.

Re: Kibale Forest and Semuliki (Uganda)

Shoo, is definately a good price for all that.
I was also surprised by how much inter Africa flights seem to have come down - a return flight from Cape Town to Entebbe is about $850!
